DEATH OF A PEOPLE’S PRESIDENT
ARAB NEWS-THURSDAY 30 JULY 2015

This refers to the sad news of the Indian scientist’s sudden death. (Former Indian President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam dies,” July 28) An era has come to an end. Abdul Kalam will always be remembered as a person of great spiritual values with scientific approach to country’s progress and for his contribution to the development of rocket technology.

It will be more appropriate to call Kalam as “people’s president,” who was a rare combination of science, education and morality. Kalam’s work gave humanity a reason for hope and his handshakes at public school functions gave humanity a reason to love.

The scientist was bestowed with several national and international awards including the country’s highest civilian honor, Bharat Ratna, in 1997. The world is short of great statesmen, the likes of which we have witnessed in Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi and Gamal Abdul Nasser. Kalam’s demise is not just the loss of a nation, but that of the whole world. He has left behind a great and an everlasting legacy, which will be a source of inspiration for generations to come.

A man of action par excellence, his death has left a void in the nation’s public life, which can’t be filled for ages to come.

The late Shekhawati always believed the common man must be at the center of all government policies. He was as an able administrator, an illustrative parliamentarian, and a true democrat.

GUJRAL DOCTRINE ENHANCED TIES WITH OUR NEIGHBOURS
THE PIONEER--02/04 DECEMBER 2012 - L.E.

The demise of the 12th Prime Minister of India, Inder Kumar Gujral, is not only a great loss to India but also to all its neighbours with whom he genuinely tried to build better relations.

He was a suave and sober politician who, as Minister for External Affairs, left a mark on the country's foreign policy. Though his tenure as Prime Minister was brief, it was eventful and marked by his sense of conviction. He will be remembered for the Gujral Doctrine, which comprised five principles to guide india's conduct of foreign relations with its immediate neighbours, including Pakistan.

It is a measure of the respect that IK Gujral commanded that politicians cutting across their differences paid glowing tributes to him. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh rightly said that Gujral would always be remembered as a man of peace, an idealistic person who lived by his principles, and an intellectual with a human touch. His life will continue to inspire today's younger generation of politicians.

Gujral Doctrine enhanced ties with our neighbours - We all hope that the rich and splendid legacy he has left behind will be carried forward by his able parliamentarian son Naresh Gujral.

With the passing away of former south African President Nelson Mandela, the revered icon of South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle and a towering figure of 20th century politics, an era comes to an end.

Mandela will always be remembered for his fierce dignity and unbending will when he scarified his own freedom for others’ freedom. He had the privilege of becoming the first black leader of Africa’s biggest economy after historic all-race elections after spending about three decades in prison as a political prisoner.

Mandela’s superb sense of humour and lack of bitterness towards his former oppressors ensured global appeal for the charismatic leader. He as a senior statesman took the cause as of leading Aids campaign before finally retiring from public life in 2004. A Nobel Peace laureate, Mandela was a great source of inspiration for the African people during the apartheid period and later he turned into a symbol of nonviolence for them in the present age of violence.

Today the world is already short of great statesmen like Abraham Lincoln, John F Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and Gamal Nasser. Mandela’s demise is not only a great loss to South Africa, but also the world.

The world has lost an apostle of humanity who re-defined services for the poor, helpless and homeless. By now a legendary in Pakistan, Edhi created world’s largest ambulance service in the world, ever ready to reach out to the needy at a time when the country lacked any organized system helped by the government to support the people in need.

This way the Edhi foundation made a great example by sheer dint of its work that included exemplary humanitarian support and relief to thousands of poor and displaced people, care for elderly mentally ill and hungry, rehabilitation for drug addicts and shelter homes for women and children abandoned by society. Most notable work of his foundation was giving dignified burial to the bodies retrieved from streets.

The landslide victory of Ms Aung San Suu Kyi in Myanmar’s recent parliamentary election is akin to the moment when Nelson Mandela walked out of jail to become President of a new South Africa. ARAB NEWS — Friday 13 November 2015-L.E.

It’s indeed a landslide victory for Myanmar’s democratic champion Aung San Suu Kyi. This reminds us of Nelson Mandela who had been incarcerated in jail for 27 years before walking out to become South Africa’s president.

Suu Kyi, who spent decades of imprisonment in Myanmar, has finally come out to win overwhelmingly the parliamentary election.

Myanmar, after 25 years of military rule, is all set to hand power to Suu Kyi. These are indeed the memorable moments reflecting democracy’s triumph.

Suu Kyi had the option to go into exile along with her family, but she chose to stay in the country remaining under house arrest for all these years. By taking a firm stand on a democratic form of government, she won many hearts in Myanmar and outside.

This is Myanmar’s first free general election in decades, with massive turnout of 80 percent of the 30 million eligible voters, especially in the countryside.

Suu Kyi will however not find it easy as the road ahead is not full of roses. She would need to take concrete measures like the one on Rohingya issue. The minority Muslims have suffered a lot under the military junta and are deprived of their basic rights including the right to vote.

The world in general must seize this opportunity to open a new era of partnership with Myanmar, which is gateway to east.

Sir - The landslide victory of Myanmar's champion of democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi, in the country's recently held parliamentary elections reminds us of Nelson Mandela's achievements in South Africa. The latter was elected as the president of South Africa in 1994, after being released from prison.

Such memorable moments, although rare, mark a triumph of democracy. The world has waited for the release of Suu Kyi for a long time. She has been rewarded handsomely after spending decades under house arrest. Although she had the option of leaving the country and staying with her husband in exile, she chose to stay back and place herself under house arrest. Her fight for restoring democracy in Myanmar has found the support of millions, both at home and abroad. It was remarkable to witness the large turnout of voters, who queued up to exercize their democratic rights, braving the blazing sun.

Now that Suu Kyi and her party have won the elections, she should take some concrete steps for the welfare of the ethnic minorities of the country, such as the Rohingya Muslims, who have suffered a lot under the rule of the military junta. The world must seize this opportunity to start a new era of partnership with Myanmar, which happens to be the 'Gateway to the East'.

His death has created a big vacuum in the world of art which is hard to fill. He was a wonderful human being as well. In his life he earned both accolades as well as backlash over his art. It is said we all carry a pen in our pockets but Husain always carried a painting brush in his pocket.

He was a painter/artist par excellence as his paintings made waves across the globe but these carried some controversies as well. Even Forbes magazine honoured him with title of “Picasso of India”. The Indian prime Minister has rightly said that Husain’s death is a great loss to the nation and he will always be remembered for bringing Indian art to the world. His painting were not only on Indian civilisation but recently he had started painting the Arab civilisation as well.

By heart Husain was Indian to the core though he was in self imposed exile in Qatar due to threats from some organisations and had taken Qatar nationality. However, he always wanted to return to India and was working towards that but destiny willed otherwise and he died in London.

In recognition of his great artistic talent he was bestowed with many national awards by the government of India like the Bharat Vibhushan and Raja Ravi Varma Award and was nominated to Rajya Sabha (upper house of parliament).

The most fitting tribute to this legendary artist will be if the government of India posthumously honour him with the Bhushan Ratna award, the highest civilian award and release a postal stamp in his honour.

Tribute to Bal Thackeray
A national loss-The Statesman-21st Nov 2012-LE

The death of Bal Thackeray marks the end of a generation of post-independence leaders, who left their mark on the political sphere. He displayed remarkable qualities of leadership and was uncompromising in his stand on patriotism. He was outspoken and always driven by strong principles. The massive turnout at the cremation was suggestive of the profound respect the people of Mumbai had for the Shiv Sena leader.

His death is a loss not merely to Maharashtra but to the nation as well. He was a perfect blend of the nationalist and the traditionalist who always lent unstinted support to worthy causes.

He was a stalwart who could feel the political and social pulse of the country. He was a multifaceted personality, a famous cartoonist, a good human being, a reliable friend. He could have become the Chief Minister when the BJP-Shiv Sena coalition was in power, but preferred to rule by remote control.

He was a prudent leader who strove for the welfare of the people and the integrity of India. He has left behind a legacy that is difficult to elucidate Yours, etc.

Sir — An era has come to an end with the demise of Verghese Kurien, also known as the father of India’s ‘white revolution’. Kurien worked with missionary zeal to eliminate the scarcity of milk in India through a cooperative movement — the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation. He spearheaded “Operation Flood”, a dairy development programme, that made hygienic milk available at reasonable prices. The “White Revolution” transformed the milk-deficient country into the world’s largest milk producer. Like B.V. Rao, the founder of the Venkateshwara Hatcheries group, Kurien was a legend. Today, 10 million farmers under the National Dairy Development Board provide around 20 million litres of milk each day to 200 dairy cooperatives across India.

Kurien has been honoured with awards not only in India, but also abroad for his contribution to the dairy industry. These include the Magsaysay award, the Krishi Ratna award and the Padma Vibhushan.

He has left behind a priceless legacy — the brand Amul — that has attained considerable fame.

This is in reference to the article “Ravi Shankar: The Godfather of World Music” published in KT on December 13. The world of music has lost a great legend with demise of sitar player and composer Ravi Shankar.

An era of Indian classical music has come to an end with the passing away of the maestro, who was the greatest proponent of Indian traditional music. It must be acknowledged that the legendary musician was perhaps one of the most well-known Indians globally known whose accomplishments at the international level are certainly more than other Indian musician.

Ravi Shankar will be best remembered as the sitar virtuoso who became a musical icon of the hippie movement during the 1960s after hobnobbing and greatly influencing the Beatles. He is also credited with popularising Indian music through his work with violinist Yehudi Menuhin and introducing traditional Indian ragas to Western audiences.

Not only was he an amazing artist, he was also a very humble person. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh paid tribute to this legendary sitar player by calling him a national treasure and global ambassador of India’s cultural heritage.

This iconic musician had the distinction of receiving many national and global awards, including India’s highest civilian awards.

Sir — An era has come to an end with the death of Hugo Chavez. He was a firebrand socialist leader, who was committed to improving the lives of his people. Chavez’s death has posed quite a few problems for Cuba. The country has been receiving almost 100,000 barrels of oil per day to meet two-thirds of its requirement. If Venezuela’s next leader were to end the assistance or alter the generous terms, Cuba would see a rise in its oil import bills. The Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas might also find itself increasingly marginalized. Transnational crime has flourished under Chavez, with Venezuela serving as a major hub for shipments bearing narcotics. The US has added the names of a number of high-level Venezuelan officials to its foreign narcotics kingpins list, including that of the former defence minister, Henry Rangel Silva, for their association with criminal cartels.

Chavez’s death has left behind a void that will be difficult to fill. He was an iconic crusader whose legacy will remain a source of inspiration for socialist leaders the world over.Yours faithfully.

The Telegraph-18th Jan 2016-LE-

Sir - An era has come to an end with the death of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. He was a great statesman. Sayeed would be remembered not just in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, of which he was the chief minister, but all over the country. He provided exemplary leadership at a time when Kashmir was witnessing a rise in extremism. In his political career spanning decades, he gained many admirers from across the political spectrum. He also became the first Muslim home minister of India.

The nation has lost a visionary leader. He has left behind a void, which will be difficult to fill in the immediate future. Sayeed opened a new chapter in Indian politics when he allied with the Bharatiya Janata Party to form the government in Srinagar.

Hopefully, his daughter, Mehbooba Mufti - who, it is being speculated, will become the next chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir would try to reach out to all sections of the society as her father had done. The state needs a good administrator at its helm.

Yours faithfully,
