Sir,An era has come to an end with the passing away of veteran film star Dev Anand. He was an evergreen romantic actor of Indian cinema who entertained
us for more than five decades. He has left a void which will never perhaps be filled again.

The year 2011 has been the saddest year for the world of Indian classical music, Ghazals, fine art and acting as we have been witness to the departure of many of its stalwarts. Versatile actor Dev Anand had enthralled Indian cinema world with some superb films. He had large number of fans not only in India but in Pakistan as well as the Gulf especially Saudi Arabia and UAE.

The eminent actor had won many laurels in his life time for his outstanding contribution to the field of Indian Cinema.

It is fair to say that his death is a irreparable loss to world of cinema and his legacy of classical films will continue to entertain us.

"Sanjeev Kumar, A Versatile Actor, who shined among the Bollywood Stars"

Sir,Legendary film star Sanjeev Kumar who passed away at young age of 47 years(1936-1985),he was one of the versatile actor of the Bollywood, who shined among the stars and will be best remembered as the most talented actor of his time,He was very famous star in the 60's and 70's and very popular for bringing offbeat characters to life, His real name was Harihar jethala Jariwala, was popularly known in the film industry as "Haribhai",with his short span of 25 years in the film industry,he acted in 153 films, where he used to invest heavily in the character he used to play with unique charm.

Before entering film industry,he had displayed his citing talent as a stage artist ,infact he had started his acting career as a stage artist with IPTA in Mumbai, where played variety of roles ,at young age of 22 years,he especially demonstrated his acting talent when he played an old man's role at stage.

Sanjeev Kumar ,was probably the best mainstream actor, Bollywood has ever seen so far.He was a multi faceted actor, who could play variety of roles, from romantic, comic as well as intense serious role at ease,Sanjeev Kumar was known for his Iconic roles, which he displayed in films like Sholy,Shikar,Pati Patni Aur Woh etc.

He was regarded as one of the finest actor of all times, but his stellar performance came in the epic movie "Sholay", when even after a decade of its release "Sholay",cinema houses were still running house full, unfortunately its main star vengeful Thakur Baldev singh(Sanjeev Kumar) called its quits and left for eternity, but even today, after more than 25 years after his demise, sheer range of landmark roles he essayed in Hindi cinema were unparalleled from any standard,In his memorable role in "Sholay",he performed the role of policeman and a Thakur, in this movie with his superb performance and an arm amputated,he even overshadowed Amitabh Bacahan, Dharmender and Amjad Khan, Sanjeev Kumar's another cinematic landmark role was in the film Vidhaata where thespian Dilip Kumar was in the lead role.

If there was an actor in Bollywood, who defied versatility in acting,it was late Sanjeev kumar who had inspired the film writers to create a character for himself, Sanjeev Kumar was an actor par excellence, who performed effortlessly even most difficult roles with ease and will gave sterling performance, he played the role of Police officer Thakur Baldev Singh in the Epic movie "Sholay" or double comic double role in Angoor which brought all round laurels for his performance,Sanjeev Kumar was a superb classical actor who dared to do the roles of even old man when the hero of that film being close to his age or even younger, but Sanjeev Kumar's displayed total commitment to his roles irrespective of whether his roles were small or big,it was something that had put him in a class apart from his contemporaries in Bollywood,He belonged to those great breed of actors, who once go before camera, he will become the character himself to give the best of artistic performance,

He was a multifaceted star who is still remembered for playing a variety of roles on big screen, from being Amitabh Bachchan's father in 'Trishul' to the husband of his former beloved Rekha in 'Silsila',Sanjeev Kumar, The actor played romantic as well as serious roles with an ease,It's so ironic that the man who played so many superb characters with grey hair and played the role of old man's in many superbly hit films, did not live enough to be old and died young from any standard at the young age of 47.

The eminent actor had won many laurels in his life time for his outstanding contribution to the field of Indian Cinema. Film fare Award for Best Actor: He won the award for Aandhi (1976) and for Arjun Pandit(1977) National Film Award for Best Actor: He won this award in for Dastak(1971) and for Koshish(1973) Cine goers Council: (Delhi) film Awards(1975). BFJA Best Actor: He won the award for his film Koshish(1974) Naval Stars Awards:Shanoo Varun Trophy(1969).

Even after more than three decades of his demise, his memories are still afresh in the mind of cinema lovers, even today he rules over the minds and heart of his fans ,who throng to cinema halls whenever his films are shown.

With his demise, the golden era of classical movies actors has come to an end,it is fair to say that his death is a irreparable loss to world of cinema and his legacy of classical movies will continue to entertain us for time to come.

A glorious chapter in Hindi cinema has come to an end with the death of AK Hangal. He was an outstanding character artist and a great human being. In a career spanning nearly five decades, he had more than 200 films to his credit. Hangal mostly played family-oriented character roles of elders like father or grandfather.

But the iconic actor will be best remembered for his roles he played in Namak Haram, Sholay, Shaukin, Parichay and Aaina. He brought the audience to tears with the portrayal of famous 'Rahim chacha' in Sholay. His talent got him the Padma Bhushan in 2006.

He had also won many other citations and trophies in his illustrious career. He was also a superb theatre artiste who was involved with IPTA along with the likes of Balraj Sahni and Kaifi Azmi, both of whom had Marxist leanings. The grand old man of Hindi cinema had made a guest appearance in the TV soap opera Madhubala in his last days. It is sad that the artiste in his last days was struggling for his life due to financial problems as his source of income had dried out. However, a few senior artistes in the industry had helped him to some extent.

Sir — A glorious chapter in Hindi cinema has come to an end with the death of the distinguished actor, A. K. Hangal ("Bolly's grandpa no more", Aug 27). He was well known for his 'character roles'. In a five-decade-long career, he has over 200 films to his credit.

The actor is best remembered for the characters he played in films like Namak Haram, Sholay, and Parichay. He had played the unforgettable Rahim Chacha in Sholay. His performance had moved audiences across India. He may have been a bit out of place among st the glitz of Bollywood, but his talented performances brought him a Padma Bhushan in 2006.

Hangal acted not only in films but was also a distinguished member of the Indian People's Theatre Association, along with Balraj Sahni and Kaifi Azmi. When Hangal excelled as an actor, Hindi films were different in essence. They were not like the films of today, which mostly rely on glamour and gimmicks. It is heartbreaking

Sir — The sudden and shocking demise of well-known film-maker and actor, Rituparno Ghosh, who had enthralled audiences with his celluloid gems and who gave Bengali cinema a new dimension in the post-Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen era, is a profound loss to the world of cinema. It is creditable that in the short span of his film-making career, which began with a short stint in advertising, he won nearly 12 national and some international awards for his work. His was a genius in the mould of Bengali greats, and he had the ingenuity and the aesthetic sensibility to explore ‘taboo’ subjects with rare sensitivity and creativity.

No surprise then that he had some of the top Hindi and Bengali cinema actors, from Amitabh Bachchan, Sharmila Tagore and Rakhee to Ajay Devgn, Jackie Shroff and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan vying to be a part of his films.

Rituparno Ghosh’s unparalleled contribution to the world of cinema will continue to inspire the young generation of talented film-maker in this country.

The untimely death of Paul Walker at the relatively young age of 40 in a tragic car accident is an irreparable loss to the world of racing and cinema. Walker died when his Porsche, driven by a friend, hit a lamp post and was engulfed in flames.

It was a bitter irony that a man who spent most of his career behind the steering wheel of one or other super racing car, lost his life in a car crash. He was one of the foremost actors who symbolised America's love affair with automobiles.

He will be best remembered for his role as agent Brian O'Connor in the Fast and Furious films, beginning in 2001 after his performance in the 2000 thriller The Skulls caught the eye of producer Neal Moritz, who cast him in Fast and Furious and Walker rode to stardom. He appeared in all but one of the six films in the series and was one of the leading protagonists along Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez.

Walker's death has sent shockwaves throughout Hollywood and the future of the mega-hit franchise hangs in the balance as the producers review how to proceed without him. Fast and Furious wouldn't be the same without him, their biggest star. The void created will be hard to fill. May his soul rest in peace.

She was the last of Hollywood's golden-era icons.

I fully agree with you (March 27) that Queen of cologne's lucrative line of fragrances will keep Taylor's estate smelling great long after her passing as she actively promoted famous lifestyle brands which have become landmarks and most successful.

Taylor had breathtaking beauty and was a most glamorous and stylish actress of Hollywood and in her career spanning five decades, she has left a lasting impact. Sir - I felt sad on reading the news of the death of Christopher Lee, who essayed the iconic role of Count Dracula. With his demise, a glorious chapter in the world of cinema has come to an end. Lee, a British actor who earned a knighthood, had devoted his long acting career to portraying villains - including Dracula - in classic horror films. He was often described as a titan of the golden age of cinema, and was a distinguished veteran of the Second World War. He was a gentleman who brought to his viewers many memorable roles. It is true that he played villainous characters, but he was also versatile. The famous film director, Tim Burton, who worked with Lee on five films, rightly described him as the "last of his kind - a true legend".

Lee appeared in more than 200 films during his career, which started the 1940s. Some of his most outstanding performances were seen in films such as Count Dracula, The Wicker Man and The Man with the Golden Gun, among others. For his contribution to cinema, Lee won many awards including the Academy Fellowship, which is the highest honour that can be given by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. He was knighted by Prince Charles in 2009.

Lee has left behind a rich legacy. His death has created an outpouring of grief from many quarters. He will be greatly missed.

I agree with the letter End of an era, (KT, June 28). Nora Ephron died due to leukemia, but she will always be remembered for making a mark in the male dominated world of Hollywood.

She was a multi-faceted personality who trumped herself as a leading screen writer, essayist, author and film maker beside being a noted journalist. She wrote many romantic comedies for Hollywood films such as "When harry met sally" and "Sleepless in Seattle" which went on to become great hits. She was nominated for Oscar Award and for Academy Award as a screen writer. She also wrote a novel, Heartburn. Now, Nora Ephron has left us leaving behind a legacy of a most admired woman who made a name for herself in writing and directing Hollywood films with her distinctive classic voice and formidable and classic wit.

She was always concerned about women's rights which reflected in her collection of essays. She, in fact, she taught generation of women to be daughters and how to be so successfully in a male-dominated society.
