STATE IGNORING OUR OWN MARTYRS
The Indian Express-June 10,1999,-L.E.

Sir, supreme sacrifices are being made by our valiant defense personnel While performing their duties for the sake of our freedom and integrity of the nation in Kargil sector. They are bravely facing heavy artillery and hostile terrain, rugged mountains ranging 15,000-17,000 feet with chilly winds sweeping across these mountains making it harder to breath normally.

But it is shameful that the Government of Karnataka neither has sent any of its senior ministers nor any senior official to those bereaved families on behalf of the State. Further, it is sad that the State has not announced any significant monetary assistance unlike the other State Governments which have announced handsome assistance to families of those young defense personnel who laid down their lives, especially those brave Air Force pilots who accomplished a very tough flying mission.

State like Rajasthan, Orissa, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh have already announced handsome monetary assistance with residential sites and jobs for war windows. We should rather appreciate Bihar whose economy is not better than Karnataka – yet they have given Rs 10 lakh and other assistance.

I would like to pay tributes to Fit Lt S Muhilan, Naik Bassaya and soldier desal who laid down their lives while accomplishing a national task. On behalf of many in the State, I would also like to assure their families that we share their grief at this juncture and hope that the Karnataka.

Government will give a suitable enhance reward of not just Rs 1 lakh, as announced, but also give other assistance as given by other States.

Deccan Chronicle, WED,29,JULY,2009,L,E.

It is unfortunate that few politicians or serving officers attend the function in Bengaluru to honour Kargil martyrs (City forgets fallen brave, July 27). India’s Kargil victory should be remembered and commemorated with a great sense of pride. India lost hundreds of soldiers who braved heavy artillery fire in treacherous terrain to repulse the Pakistani Army.

It was one of the toughest wars ever fought, especially given the altitude at which the troops were engaged in combat. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh rightly pointed out that brave men sacrificed their lives for the integrity and freedom of the nation.

Refer to ‘KPS Gill dies at 82’ (May 27); if there is one person in contemporary history of nation who deserved the Bharat Ratna, it was the legendary KPS Gill for his war on terrorism in Punjab. He was a devout Sikh, but the police uniform was also part of his religion.

He was one of the most upright and courageous IPS officers, who led from the front and inspired others. He gave command to young officers who took the war against terrorism to its logical conclusion. His valuable services to the nation will always be remembered.

ARMY OFFICER’S SACRIFICE SHOULD NOT GO IN VAIN
The Pioneer,Friday, 12 May 2017 | Ramesh J Jethwani | Bengaluru

Sir,The brutal killing of young Lt Ummer Fayaz exposes the dastardly nature of terrorism, as he was not even posted in Kashmir, nor had participated in any anti-terrorism operation against terrorists there. Only a few days back, Pakistan Army killed and beheaded two Indian security personnel, which triggered outrage across the country. Lt Ummer Fayaz had come to his native place in Kashmir to attend the wedding of his relative, when he was abducted by terrorists and killed — and act of cowardice. He was a good sportsman and had participated in many tournaments.

The nation shares the grief of the family and stands in solidarity with the bereaved family in this hour of tragedy.

It is unfortunate that this killing seems to intimidate people and discourage young people from joining the Armed Forces/security forces. Sacrifice of Lt Ummer Fayaz will not go in vain and it will continue to inspire young Kashmiri youth to join the Armed Forces and fight terrorists more vigorously.

Sir-This refers to the news report, “Fearless CBI officer Palsania no more” (November 9). We were shocked to hear the sad and sudden demise of CBI Deputy Inspector General Suresh Kumar Palsania (44) on Friday.

He was a bright officer who headed the team which meticulously investigated the multi-billion dollar 2G Spectrum scam. This was perhaps the most significant corruption case in the country’s history, and which could be a benchmark on how economic offences should be investigated. The high-profile investigation under Palsania led to the arrest of highly influential people, including politicians and large corporate CEOs, unheard of till now.

Palsania was awarded the Police Medal for meritorious service on Republic Day this year. A man known for his courage, principles and integrity, he kept the IPS flag flying high. At a time when the CBI is feeling acute shortage of good and competent officers, Palsania death comes as a great setback, not only to agency but to the nation as whole.

His valuable services to the nation will always be remembered.

Sir, Supreme sacrifice by constable P.C Nagesh of Bangalore police while performing his duty trying to apprehend two thieves in the wee hours of Sunday morning will always be remembered and will go a long way in improving the image of the police.

Public faith in the professionalism of police had been eroded. We read about police had been eroded. We read about police brutality but we should also see policemen performing difficult tasks. We sleep peacefully at night, only because policemen patrol to keep us safe from unwarranted elements. Policemen work in a most difficult and inhospitable environment at the cost of their lives to ensure safety of the people.

The need of the hour is to increase the number of Hoslayas and Cheetahs. All efforts should be made to apprehend the runaway driver. Nagesh should be awarded with the President’s Medal and his family should be looked after by the Government which will boost the morale of his brothers in department.
